In an age of chronic housing shortage across Australia’s big cities, should people be punished for buying properties and keeping them empty?
Sydney and Melbourne local councils could follow the lead of some of their UK counterparts — increase taxes on houses left vacant over an extended period of time.
There are 90,000 empty properties across Sydney, according to the 2011 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) census.
